So the long anticipated the new Jöttnar kit has landed(ish). At the moment it is only available for pre-order (dispatch in first week of November 2014). The new range has arrived in the form of two new shells; one hard-shell and one soft-shell, an additional down piece and a beanie. However they haven’t neglected the past because as well as all this they have updated the not quite yet a classic Bergelmir with a new colour; they’ve also made the Fjörm even more epic and they’ve revamped the Alfar.
A very impressive looking piece the Hymir is a super light Neoshell smock. It’ll be ideal for cragging, mountain routes and summer alpine. I’m already a dedicated Neoshell devotee, particularly the Bergelmir (expect a full review on that early 2015), so a light shell for all things fast and light from what I think is the best fabric for the job is got to be great. If your not a smock fan (I’m not yet) this highly featured but simply constructed shell may well change your mind and if you are a smock fan it will reaffirm your love for them. Although the fabric used is the super-light grade from Polartec it should be a tough enough shell for those fast moving among us as Jöttnar have a 3 layer construction.
For me the party piece is typically Jöttnar well thought out but stunningly simple, and underdone by other manufacturers, a zippered stuff sack with a specific loop for clipping a carabiner making it easy to have your expensive shell clipped to your harness in a reassuring manner rather than just using the drawcord found on some manufacturers stuff sacks.
Other features include a half length zip Aquaguard zip, a harness compatible chest pocket and obviously a fully adjustable helmet compatible hood with internal pull cords to keep a clean and simple outer face to the jacket.
The Hymir costs £230 and is available for Pre-order now!
This new soft-shell can run with the best of them. If your after a versatile and breathable soft-shell then this is it. There is already a large choice of ‘heavy weight soft-shells’ (not that heavy, but not the super light options). To me I see this as winter weight soft-shell towards the tougher end of the soft-shell market; as at 675g for a medium it’s not nearly as light as other options out there. It uses Jöttnar’s own polymer bond Fusion-pro fabric; the Fusion-pro has a micro-fleece inner lining, which should help keep you warm in the winter and because it is a non-membrane fabric it should breathe and keep you cool on warmer climbs. “Non-membraned, what what, I’m gonna get drenched!” I hear you cry, but alas no I’ve been informed that due to the particular DWR finish given to the jacket, it should be highly water resistant.
The jacket features an Aquaguard main zip, 2 OS compatible chest pockets, 2 hand warmer pockets and a party piece of forearm sleeve pockets, ideal for lift passes etc. Obviously it has a helmet compatible, fully adjustable hood.
The Garm costs £220 and is available for Pre-order now!
Every since Rab did there original Microlight Alpine jacket way back in AW 2011 light weight micro-baffle down jackets have been all the rage. So here’s Jöttnar’s lightest down jacket. It features 850 fill power DOWN-TEK water resistant down; this hydrophobic down has the advantage that its water-repellence doesn’t wash out. It also features NEUTRON 120 synthetic insulation in the key wet-out areas such as cuffs and the hem.
The Fenrir should be perfect for summer alpine use and would work well as a light compressible warm layer for the UK to, due to a durable ripstop outer fabric with a DWR finish it will work as a outer or mid layer.
The Fenrir costs £200 and is available for Pre-order now!
They’ve also done a beanie, with lots of colour choice there’s no reason not to look fabulous on the slopes in and with a well made beanie you can do just that.
The Vidar costs £20 and is available for Pre-order now!
For the ladies there is an updated Alfar
The guys at Jöttnar have also revamped the Bergelmir with a new colour, as well as the Fjörm and the Alfar.
The Fjörm has also been upgraded with an additional 20g of 850 fill power hydrophobic down, NEUTRON™ 120 synthetic panels in key wet-out zones and an uprated 30 denier face fabric.
We’ve heard rumblings that, that might not be it yet either; so we shall have to wait and see.
